Friday Favourites: Mom's Night In

I feel like the TV gods have bestowed me a gift in my hand, I can hear the trumpets sound as I tighten my grasp on the tv remote. Now with the long weekend ahead of us, it’s even a better edition of Friday Favourites, a must-watch list of Netflix shows for you.

Here is a list of shows, I’ve watched and loved.

FAVOURITE ROMANCE AND PERIOD SHOW:BRIDGERTON

Obvious! Seriously, I will forgive you for this indiscretion if you have yet to watch this period piece. I too was skeptical when I saw this period piece pop up on the latest list on Netflix. Yet, dear reader, this show, Bridgerton is nothing that you ever imagine it to be with the powerhouse Shonda Rhimes at the helm. Based on Julia Quinn’s books, Bridgerton follows the powerful family, the Bridgertons as the eldest daughter Daphne makes her debut to London’s society in search of a husband.

Well, I’ll confess that I have watched this season twice over now and am currently reading the eighth book that follows the Bridgerton family. Thank goodness, the second season is currently being filmed.

FAVOURITE DRAMA: VIRGIN RIVER

You might recognise a few faces from this show including This Is Us, Grey’s Anatomy and Smallville to name a few. Mel, a LA nurse decides that she needs a break from her life in the city and flees to the quaint town of Virgin River where everyone knows everyone. Yet, she has a mysterious past and a wedding band on “that” finger, no one knows much about her except that the town’s doctor needs a nurse to assist his stubborn ass (not his donkey). What’s a town drama without some love triangle’s thrown in the mix too. Season three should be out this year.

FAVOURITE “WATCH WITH YOUR BESTIE” SERIES: FIREFLY LANE

This show stars Scrubs and Grey’s Anatomy alumni respectively, Sarah Chalke and Katherine Heigl. Firefly Lane follows the two unlikely best friends, Kate the goody-two-shoes loyalist and Tully the wild and ballsy friend as they try to navigate their teen years, adult life, and every stage in between that. This back-and-forth show, illustrates different times in the girls’ lives as it shows the experiences that molded their lives. This show will have you reminiscing about your life too.

FAVORUITE COMEDY SERIES: SCHITT’S CREEK

Don’t let the punny name fool you. Out of boredom one night, my hubby and I had no clue what to watch so I decided let’s give Schitt’s Creek a try as I recalled the show had won a few awards at the Emmy Awards. The show starts off with the super-rich Rose family losing all their riches despite their bad luck with the stereotypical “someone stole their money”, they still have each other. Wrong! The Roses are super spoilt and need to navigate their simpler life in a small town called Schitt’s Creek which was a birthday gift joke. Give the show a few episodes to get into the sarcastic, eclectic yet lovable characters.

FAVOURITE ‘FICTIONAL’ SHOW: THE CROWN

According to sources, The Crown is based on the historical family, the British monarchy, yet a fictionalised version of the family tied with real-life events. It sounds complicated but I think once you watch it, you’ll soon see if it really is a work of “work”.It begins with the death of King George VI and his daughter, Elizabeth’s ascension to the throne. It gives an interesting “view” of the Firm and how the royal members treat one another including the late Princess Diana. It remains to be seen if the “younger” royals including Kate, William, Harry and Meghan will be written into the series. Watch this if you’re a fan of the hidden lives of the royals.

FAVOURITE FUNNY YET RELATABLE SHOW: WORKIN’ MOMS

Leaking boobs, a demanding job and no time for yourself, it sounds like a working mom. This Canadian series follows Kate a PR guru as she battles to return back to work after giving birth while venting to her crazy yet lovable mommy and baby group. There are pure laugh-out-loud moments that you’ll recognise the resemblance to your life. A new season is on the horizon which shows the different dimensions of being a woman and a mother nowadays.

FAVOURITE “I KNEW IT!” MOVIE: FALL FROM GRACE

If I could climb into tv screen to catch a manipulative person, this movie is it. It follows a divorcee, Grace who needs a new beginning, a new lease on life. Mr Romantic swoops into her life like the perfect gentleman. Just typing this line has pushed my blood pressure up! Without giving anything away, this thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat and has some shocking moments!

FAVOURITE COMEDIC RELIEF: GRACE AND FRANKIE

If you’re not familiar with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, do not let that discourage you from this comedic gem of a show. As recently divorced women, the unlikely duo embarks on the next chapter of their lives together. The ever regal yet stiff Grace (Fonda) with a penchant for drinking vodka and the free-spirit, eccentric artist Frankie (Tomlin) are entertaining to watch as they put their “foot” down on how their life will be from now on.

FAVOURITE TEEN MOVIE TRILOGY: TO ALL THE BOYS I LOVED BEFORE

Oh young love! Despite my age, I loved this cute teen romance and how a girl’s deepest secrets are released in the world.

Lara-Jean Covey (played Lana Condor) has a stash of letters that she will never post to the addressees, why? Well, the letters contain all her feelings for a few boys that she had a crush on over the years. Like any teen romance movie, the truth comes out and Lara-Jean has to deal with the repercussions of those letters thanks to her meddling, annoying younger sister.

Now this a condensed list of what I have watched, that I’ll need to update again. The next list below are options on my must-watch list that I need to get to ASAP.
