Have you ever gone on an adventure? I was probab Have you ever gone on an adventure? I was probably the same age as Adriana when I decided that I was going to “run away” from home just like you see in movies. Kids pack up their things and leave with a stick and a little cloth bag tied to it. I thought I was inventive because I had more to pack and a pink plastic pram would do the job. I didn’t tell anyone about my elaborate plan. I packed my “essentials” of countless toys— Barbies, baby figurines (remember the ones with nappies on them that changed colour in cold water?) —in my plastic pram and I set off on my adventure with my little sister @mcamlester_13 in tow. I neglected to share that we were “running away” to her but we’re always together so the details didn’t matter. So where did we go? To the other side of our plot 50m away from the house to a tree. It wasn’t just a regular tree, it was a pecan nut tree so it had low hanging branches. So low that a little 5 year old would bend her head down and walk to centre of the tree and think that she stepped into a different world as the branches camouflaged the distance. Although I’m sure my mom could see our little legs under the shelter of the tree until we sat on a branch. We unpacked our toys and played for what seemed hours. Later, we returned “home” probably to have something to eat or watch some K-TV I can’t remember exact but I do remember feeling like I achieved something because I “ran away” from home and had an amazing day! Only years later, I recounted the story to my mom, we both laughed about it, especially the part of how I thought that I successfully “ran away” to have an adventure. I may not have run away but I did have an adventure with my sister. I really hope Adriana looks back to her childhood with fond memories like this that we can laugh about one day. Someone is excited that her birthday is in less th Someone is excited that her birthday is in less than two weeks, on winter solstice. A whole hand full of fingers. She asked my mom, “Avó (gran) have you ever been 5 years old?” My mommy nodded and I quipped, “She’s going to be 55”. Adriana laughed and replied, “That’s old”. “Go ask your friends how old their grannies are, I bet you that your avó is the youngest”. Adriana definitely keeps our family entertained. “Mommy, what’s this medicine for?” my daught “Mommy, what’s this medicine for?” my daughter asked quizzically. “Is your head sore?” “Something like that”, I replied. She was eyeing me out as I took my anti-depressant pill. One day I’ll delve into my story with her when she’s older to understand. Since my teens, I’ve had chronic depression and anxiety. I did the “hero” thing and tossed my meds into bin when I was feeling great instead of weaning myself off including the abrupt stop to therapy. Needless to say, it didn’t work. When I was pregnant, I was depressed. I hated being pregnant and sobbed my eyes out because I couldn’t deal with the emotions. I didn’t have the coping skills to deal with it all. After giving birth, I felt nothing. It hurts my heart to admit it, but I didn’t feel all Earth-shattering emotions. Fast-forward to a couple of weeks and I was diagnosed with severe postpartum depression. Mental Health is still considered to be a stigma amongst some cultures. The pandemic has spiked postpartum depression stats. With all the isolation, and social-distancing, “pandemic moms” are left feeling lonelier than ever.
